What Was I Thinking: Married/Divorced x 3

A view from my side.

Wild and Exciting Adventures

I have always been one to embrace spontaneity. Ex#2 and I would often pick up and go at a moment’s notice. Sometimes it was just out with friends. Other times, it was on a days long trip to somewhere. From our house in Dallas, Tx, we took spontaneous excursions to Austin, San Antonio, Shreveport (Louisiana Downs), Taos, NM, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Prince Edward Island, Canada.

We took the boys on many of those excursions, but they were largely too young to remember them. When Ex#2 and I split, the boys were 6, 5, and 3. We left Texas for North Carolina. Once there, though, I found it advantageous to continue to take the boys on what we started to call Wild and Exciting Adventures. From our base in central NC, we would take trips of varying length all over the place. We were a mere 3 hours from the NC coast, so a weekend beach trip was pretty easy. We were 4 hours from the mountains, so a weekend trip to Asheville or Boone was within easy reach.

We took longer trips, semi planned, to all sorts of other areas. We hiked in the Georgia mountains at Unicoi State Park. We rafted the New and Gauley rivers in West Virginia. We visited horse farms in Lexington, KY. We walked through the caverns in Luray, VA. We learned how to toss cabers at the Highland Games on Grandfather Mountain, NC. We were always busy, always doing something, going somewhere and exploring the country around us. Even when we were staying “home”, the boys always wanted to go on a Wild and Exciting Adventure, even if was simply to the NC Zoo or the Children’s Museum in Greensboro.

Since we moved here from NC, our wild and exciting adventures have become less frequent. Due largely to the boys getting older and having other “things” to do more interesting than traipse around the country side with their old man. We have taken a few, but not many, and most revolved around other events. Still I am looking forward to new Wild and Exciting Adventures with my daughter, Kid#4. She is old enough now, at 5, to start taking on such trips. She loves adventure and doing/trying new things. I’ve been looking for things to do and places to go. Fortunately, there are many weekend excursions we can make from here.

Wild and Exciting Adventures here we come.
