What Was I Thinking: Married/Divorced x 3

A view from my side.

I Believe

I have added a new category for posts about things for which I have a passionate belief.  Whether anyone else agrees with me or not is beside the point and I can see many of the posts in that category making some people angry or upset.  Others may be long winded, but still I decided it would be a good place to put some posts I have in mind.  So, as the first post to be so categorized, I will post a quote from the movie “Bull Durham”:

Well, I believe in the soul. The cock, the pussy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

While I don’t agree with everything in it, I’ve always loved that quote.  It is delivered with unabashed conviction.  That is how your should hold your beliefs.  I don’t apologize for mine and I don’t expect people to apologize for theirs.  Some beliefs are revolting to me, but then, I’m sure many of mine are revolting to others.  That’s the nature of the world we live in.

I believe that it is this melting pot of beliefs that makes life interesting.  As people come together and mix, they bring with them a variety of beliefs and world views.  Many of these beliefs and world views are set in stone, but most are in a constant state of flux.  They are often reformed and reshaped in subtle ways based on our experiences.  As has our species, our beliefs evolve over time to become what they are in the moment.  They mix and mingle with the beliefs of others and they adapt to our needs.

Feel free to share your beliefs and thoughts as I post in this category, but remember to please be respectful of the beliefs of others.

Hey, I think open dialogue is important. It’s very cool you’re doing this.

My belief about beliefs is this: your beliefs influence your thinking; your thinking influences your feelings/emotions; your feelings/emotions influences your behavior; and your behavior will impact others for better or for worse. Although some beliefs are benign, others are terribly malignant, which eventually metastasize within the corporate life where one is enmeshed in (i.e. work, community, home and spiritual families). I say this in tongue-in-cheek but the point is salient: how does my belief in Santa Clause impact my life with others. We should always be contemplating the impacts of our beliefs – if not for us, but at least for the welfare others.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s all a collage of influences, from our parents, our teachers, our friends and family, our religion, our geography…all of the things in our environment that interact with us. Well put.

More people should do this! Vocalizing beliefs also allows one to be reminded of why they have certain convictions. Over the years, a few of my convictions changed after general debate and thinking.
